
Cockroach infestations in homes can seriously aggravate allergies and asthma, particularly among children living in low-income urban areas. A recent study reveals that these pests do more than spread allergens – they also release harmful bacterial toxins known as endotoxins through their droppings.
Researchers at North Carolina State University discovered that the heavier the cockroach infestation, the higher the levels of both allergens and endotoxins in household dust. When professional pest control successfully reduced or eliminated the cockroaches, these dangerous substances dropped sharply.
Hidden Danger from Endotoxins
In the United States, cockroach allergens are present in 85% of inner-city homes, and up to 80% of children with asthma show sensitivity to them. Cockroaches produce more than 20 different airborne allergens, yet no single type dominates the reaction. Surprisingly, about one in five people who react to cockroaches do not respond to any known allergen.
Endotoxins are tiny inflammatory particles released when certain bacteria die. Inhaling them can cause wheezing, headaches, fever, and irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs. While endotoxins come from many sources, this study identified cockroach feces as a major contributor in infested homes.
Female Cockroaches Carry Bigger Risk
The two-year North Carolina study focused on low-income apartment communities. Scientists compared homes with cockroach problems to those without and found strikingly high endotoxin levels in infested units.
Female cockroaches proved far more problematic than males. Their droppings contained around 2900 endotoxin units per milligram – more than double the 1400 units found in male droppings. On average, each female released about 5000 units daily, compared to just 750 from each male. Researchers explained that females eat more, leading to greater endotoxin output. Kitchens showed higher levels than bedrooms, reflecting where cockroaches gather most.
Pest Control Brings Clear Benefits
Researchers divided infested homes into two groups: one received regular pest control treatment, the other did not. A third group of naturally cockroach-free homes served as a control.
After three and six months, the results spoke for themselves. Untreated homes maintained high allergen and endotoxin levels. In contrast, homes where pest control eliminated the cockroaches saw dramatic reductions in both allergens and endotoxins, creating a much healthier indoor environment.
Co-corresponding author Coby Schal emphasised the key finding: “When you eliminate cockroaches, you eliminate their allergens. Small decreases don’t help because surviving cockroaches keep producing. But endotoxins drop significantly once the cockroaches are gone. This study shows cockroaches are the most important source of endotoxins in infested homes.”
Researchers now plan to examine in mouse models how these cockroach-related endotoxins directly affect asthma symptoms.
