Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said a proposal to hold the 16th general election (GE16) earlier than scheduled could be considered, but stressed that the government was currently focused on the economy, public wellbeing and efforts to combat corruption.
“That is a proposal I can consider, but I will think about it first and then present it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a decision,” he told reporters after Friday prayers at Bukit Indah Mosque in Ampang Jaya.
Government priorities remain unchanged
Anwar said the government’s immediate focus remained on strengthening the economy, safeguarding public wellbeing and addressing abuse of power and corruption.
“Right now, the focus is on the economy, the people’s wellbeing, and cleaning up the country from abuse of power and corruption. The government remains stable, so this is what we are focussing on,” he said.
The remarks came after Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it would be better for GE16 to be held earlier rather than waiting for Parliament to complete its full term at the end of next year.
Zahid says BN ready for either scenario
Zahid said an earlier election would allow the government to seek a fresh mandate from voters.
However, he said Umno-led BN was also prepared should the current parliamentary term run its full course.
BN is a key component of Anwar’s unity government, having backed the Pakatan Harapan chairman, alongside Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and other parties, after the 2022 general election resulted in a hung Parliament.
Anwar reiterates anti-corruption commitment
Anwar also stressed that efforts to combat corruption would continue regardless of race or background.
“This is about saving the country from corruption and abuse of power,” he said.
