Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has called for an investigation into the authenticity of a document allegedly containing minutes from a Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting, which recently went viral on social media.
He cautioned that if the document is verified as genuine and classified, its circulation could violate the Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA).
“I’ve been informed that a police report has been lodged. I cannot confirm the authenticity of the document at this point. However, if it is real and classified, the OSA applies. We must be cautious and avoid spreading such material,” Fahmi said.
He made the remarks at a press conference after launching the YOU & AI: MEET@BANGSAR event by the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) today.
The alleged document, reportedly minutes from a JAC meeting held in May, first surfaced on Reddit and later spread across platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
Fahmi also reminded journalists to be vigilant and adhere to legal frameworks when reporting such matters.
When asked whether the issue would be tabled in the Cabinet, Fahmi said it would be up to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is known to be attentive to public concerns.
On whether the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will take action, he said this would depend on public complaints, while content removal rests with the respective platform’s policy enforcement.
