Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming is prepared to sit down with Utusan Malaysia’s management after his sharp exchange with one of their journalists last week.
Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil shared the update after today’s Cabinet meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof.
Fahmi had spoken with Nga beforehand to get his side of the story.
“Nga shared his views with me before the meeting, and I also conveyed mine, which I reiterated during the Cabinet session,” Fahmi said, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.
Clearing the Air
The minister has agreed to meet the outlet’s leaders. He aims to explain personally and resolve the matter.
“I see this as a positive step, and he has committed to meeting the management to set the record straight,” Fahmi added.
In the discussion, Fahmi underlined the government’s firm stance. Journalists can pose any question while on duty.
Ministers, he said, should reply with courtesy, openness, and respect for the media.
Fahmi left further comments to Nga and his team.
Apology in Nga’s Hands
On whether an apology is coming or if Nga will meet the journalist directly, Fahmi stayed neutral.
“As for an apology, I leave that to him,” he noted.
Pressed on guidelines to prevent repeats, Fahmi pointed to existing policy. Journalists remain free to inquire.
“Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim himself has always been open to all questions, and the government maintains that journalists have every right to ask,” he said.
“In my view, we should learn from what has happened.”
