President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that an agreement has been reached for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza, describing it as a major milestone under the peace plan unveiled last year.
In a post on social media, Trump said the agreement would pave the way for Gaza to be governed by a new Palestinian government working closely with the newly established Board of Peace, a multinational organisation created under the 20-point peace plan.
He said the arrangement would also strengthen Israel’s security by ensuring Gaza is no longer used as a base for attacks.
Few details of the agreement were immediately released, and there was no immediate response from Israeli officials or Hamas following Trump’s announcement.
Roadmap outlines phased implementation
In a statement, the Board of Peace said Hamas had agreed to a detailed roadmap for implementing the next stages of the Gaza ceasefire following months of negotiations.
The board described the agreement as a historic breakthrough, saying it marked the first time Hamas had officially committed to an actionable plan to relinquish all of its weapons.
According to the statement, the disarmament process would be followed by the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
Trump said the agreement would be implemented in phases. As disarmament progresses, Israeli forces would withdraw, while an International Stabilization Force, together with a new Palestinian police force, would assume responsibility for maintaining security in Gaza.
He also said the agreement would place Gaza under the administration of a new Palestinian government serving its people.
Ceasefire followed broader peace initiative
Trump thanked Egypt, Qatar and Turkey for their roles in mediating the agreement.
The 20-point peace plan, unveiled last autumn, led to a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as well as exchanges of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
The Israel-Hamas war began after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people in Israel.
According to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed during the conflict. The war also triggered a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
