The Health Ministry has cancelled the notification of cosmetic product GB Daily Glow Skin Cream after it was found to contain scheduled poisons, including mercury.
Bernama reported that the product is now no longer allowed to be sold in the country.
The ministry said mercury is banned in cosmetics because it can be absorbed into the body and cause damage to the kidneys and nervous system.
“Mercury can also disrupt the brain development of young children or unborn babies. It can also cause rashes, irritation, and other changes to the skin,” the ministry said in a statement.
Public urged to stop using product
The ministry urged the public to immediately avoid buying and using the cosmetic.
Consumers can check the status of cosmetic products through the official National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency website at www.npra.gov.my.
Penalties for selling banned cosmetics
Anyone who sells or distributes banned cosmetics can be fined up to RM25,000 or jailed for up to three years, or both, for a first offence.
For subsequent offences, offenders can face a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
Companies found to have committed offences can be fined up to RM50,000 for a first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
