The Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) has filed multiple police reports nationwide against the Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (UMANY) over its remarks on the matriculation programme, calling for investigations into possible sedition and public mischief.
Penang GPMS vice-chairman Danial Alimin said six reports were lodged in the state, while chapters in Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Pahang and Perak have also taken similar action. Negeri Sembilan GPMS vice-chairman Hakim Zain confirmed they would lodge a report today.
UMANY recently suggested that the matriculation programme be replaced with the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) as the sole standard for public university admission.
Its president, Tang Yi Ze, argued that the STPM syllabus was more challenging and internationally recognised.
However, UMANY clarified last Saturday that it was not seeking abolition of the matriculation programme but proposing a merger with STPM to form a unified entrance system.
The group admitted its earlier use of the word “abolish” created misunderstanding and apologised.
Despite the apology, GPMS has urged authorities to investigate UMANY for sedition, public mischief and intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace.
