The recent rise in influenza A and B clusters is not out of the ordinary for this time of year, according to the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).
MMA president Dr R Thirunavukarasu urged the public to stay calm and adopt preventive steps to curb the spread.
He noted that the Health Ministry is closely monitoring the developments, emphasising that maintaining good hygiene is the most effective safeguard. This includes washing hands regularly, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wearing a mask if one feels unwell or is in crowded spaces.
“Individuals with ongoing high fever, intense cough, breathing difficulties, chest pain, or symptoms that persist beyond a few days should consult a doctor without delay,” he stated today.
“Prompt evaluation enables early intervention and lowers the chances of serious complications.”
Thirunavukarasu advised that high-risk groups—such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying chronic conditions—exercise extra caution and explore vaccination options where accessible.
“By staying alert and acting responsibly, we can handle this effectively and safeguard our communities’ well-being,” he added.
According to the Health Ministry, 97 clusters of influenza A and B infections were reported during Epidemiological Week 40/2025, spanning September 28 to October 4.
This marks a significant jump from the 14 clusters noted in the prior week, with most cases linked to educational settings.
The ministry reported increases across all states, with the top five being Selangor (43 clusters), Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (15), Penang (10), Johor (nine), and Kedah (five).
