The Muslim Choice recognition by the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Muslim Friendly Watch (MFW) is not an authorized Halal certification or marking recognized by the authorities.
Director General of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), Datuk Dr. Sirajuddin Suhaimee, said the recognition could mislead the public regarding the Halal status of a product or premise.
JAKIM Requested MFW to Stop Activity
Earlier, JAKIM had a meeting with MFW on Aug 23, 2024, and informed the organization that the Muslim Choice recognition could cause confusion among consumers, and requested that it be stopped.
However, based on complaints from state religious authorities, MFW was found to be still continuing the activity.
Based on the provisions under the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Halal Marking) Order 2011, only JAKIM and the State Islamic Religious Council/Department (MAIN/JAIN) are empowered to issue the Malaysian Halal Confirmation Certificate (SPHM) and grant permission to use the Malaysian Halal logo to any certified party.
Unauthorized Logos Are Illegal
“Any use of logos, symbols, terms, statements, or expressions implying Halal and suitable for consumption by Muslims, issued by any party other than JAKIM or MAIN/JAIN, is invalid and violates regulations.”
“It can also affect the integrity of the national Halal certification system and mislead Muslim consumers,” he said in a statement.
The Muslim Choice recognition was introduced by MFW to operators who meet the conditions and standards set by the organization, with the aim of giving consumers confidence that the recognized products or premises are of quality, clean, safe, and aligned with Islamic principles.
Meanwhile, Sirajuddin reminded all parties not to use or display any form of logo, symbol, term, statement, or expression that may give the impression of Halal without confirmation from JAKIM or MAIN/JAIN.
