A one-day Johor state assembly sitting scheduled for June 22 has sparked speculation that the state legislature could soon be dissolved to pave the way for a snap election.
DAP’s Johor Jaya assemblyman Liow Cai Tung said she received notice of the sitting today, adding that there would be no question-and-answer session during the meeting.
She also pointed out that the state assembly had already convened earlier this month, making two assembly meetings within two consecutive months an unprecedented development.
Questions raised over purpose of sitting
Liow said the Johor state assembly could technically be dissolved without convening a sitting.
‘If it’s not to announce the Johor assembly’s dissolution, then what will be on the agenda for this upcoming sitting? Let’s guess and see,’ she said in a Facebook post.
The three-term assemblyman said the unusual timing of the meeting had naturally raised questions over its purpose.
Johor polls due by next year
The Johor state assembly is scheduled to dissolve automatically in April next year if no early election is called. State polls must then be held within 60 days after dissolution.
Barisan Nasional formed the Johor government after securing 40 out of 56 seats in the 2022 state election.
Pakatan Harapan won 12 seats, while Perikatan Nasional secured three seats and Muda won one.
BN-PH ties remain under focus
Johor Barisan Nasional has already announced its intention to contest the next state election on its own, a move that drew objections from Pakatan Harapan because of their unity government cooperation at the federal level.
Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim previously said he would meet Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for what he described as ‘harmonious’ discussions regarding the Johor election.
