Kelantan police have confirmed that a Malaysian woman suspected of holding dual citizenship is the registered owner of a luxury vehicle seized by Thai authorities in a recent cross-border drug operation.
State police chief Mohd Yusoff Mamat said checks revealed the Toyota Vellfire, which carried a Malaysian registration plate, belonged to a woman in her 30s believed to hold both Malaysian and Thai nationalities.
“Her husband is a Thai national, and both are suspected to be members of a drug smuggling syndicate,” Yusoff told reporters today, adding that the confirmation came after discussions with Thai police.
He said the couple are believed to be operating actively along the Kelantan-Thai border and may be linked to a larger international network. The pair are now being tracked down with the help of Thai authorities, and the woman will soon be placed on the police wanted list.
Yusoff acknowledged that individuals holding dual citizenship posed an enforcement challenge, particularly those residing in border areas.
“We hope the National Registration Department (NRD) can conduct a thorough review, especially involving border residents,” he said.
Thai authorities had earlier said traffickers may be exploiting their dual Malaysian-Thai status to cross borders freely and evade detection.
