Khairy Jamaluddin has not yet applied to rejoin Umno, almost three years after his expulsion in January 2023.
Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed Khairy remains eligible to seek reinstatement. The final decision rests with the party’s Supreme Working Council.
“Up to today, Khairy has not contacted me regarding this matter, nor have I received any information or application form from him,” Asyraf told Berita Harian.
Any application must go through him before reaching the appeal committee and then the council for approval.
The council is set to convene on 8 November. Umno has indicated openness to welcoming back expelled or suspended members to bolster its ranks, subject to constitutional rules.
Khairy, now a Hot FM radio presenter, is reportedly poised to return before the Sabah state election this month. Sources say he has gained backing from senior leaders, including Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The deputy prime minister reportedly encouraged Khairy to submit his membership form during a wedding event in Perlis.
Asyraf viewed the potential return as a chance to revitalise Umno, particularly in appealing to younger Malay voters.
Khairy faced expulsion after criticising party leadership during the 15th general election campaign. He contested Sungai Buloh, a Pakatan Harapan stronghold, and lost but garnered a notable vote share.
“Everyone makes mistakes, and there is no reason for Umno to bar anyone from returning once they acknowledge past errors and apologise,” Asyraf said.
“Former members who have seen the benefits of Umno and its coalition in developing the country and serving the people are welcome back.”
He urged unity among members. “Now is the time for all Umno members to unite, be generous in spirit, and give their best to strengthen the party once more.”
