DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to convene a Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council meeting following recent remarks by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Loke, who is the transport minister, said the meeting was necessary to address concerns over political certainty as signs emerged that component parties in the unity government appeared to be heading in different directions.
‘Some of the statements made are not good in terms of the country’s political certainty. The government’s component parties do not seem to be heading in the same direction.
‘This would not give investors and the public much confidence,’ he said on the sidelines of an event in Sungai Buloh today.
Loke raises concerns over political certainty
Zahid made a series of veiled remarks aimed at Anwar during last week’s Umno general assembly, including a claim that Umno could govern the country better than the prime minister.
The Barisan Nasional chairman also challenged the coalition’s critics to remove Umno and BN from the unity government and table a no-confidence motion against Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat.
He said Umno and BN had agreed to form the unity government with PH on the advice of the King following the 2022 general election, but that cooperation did not mean surrendering the party’s future.
Umno says it remains free to chart its course
Zahid also said Umno and BN remained free to chart their own political course, including in the next general election and the upcoming Melaka state election.
However, he reiterated Umno’s commitment to remain with the current administration until the end of its term.
