Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam has accused Youth chief Akmal Saleh of disobeying party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on two occasions.
Lokman said Zahid should not have approved the special Umno Youth convention held last Saturday.
Permission granted with conditions
FMT previously reported that Zahid agreed to the convention on condition there would be no discussion of withdrawing from the unity government and no criticism of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Lokman told FMT: “He should not have been given the permission to hold the convention.”
Lokman recalled an incident in Kepala Batas last year when Akmal allegedly broke a promise to Zahid over a controversy involving the Malaysian flag displayed upside down.
He claimed Akmal had promised not to attend a gathering there but did so anyway.
Akmal’s promises unfulfilled
“The president himself thanked him for deciding not to proceed. But a few days later, he attended the gathering anyway,” Lokman said.
On Aug 10 last year, Akmal announced Umno Youth would visit a hardware store in Kepala Batas accused of hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
The gathering was postponed the next day due to unavoidable circumstances.
Despite this, on Aug 14, Akmal led over 500 Umno Youth members outside the shop.
At Saturday’s convention opening, Akmal claimed Zahid had approved the assembly.
He said Zahid backed grassroots calls to exit the unity government, adding: “Zahid was the first person to agree to this convention.”
Zahid ready to fight, says Akmal
Akmal recounted telling Zahid that leaving the government would make him a target.
“But Zahid told me that if this is what the grassroots want, he is prepared to fight all the way,” he said.
