Malaysia recorded a landmark achievement in 2025 as total merchandise trade surpassed the RM3 trillion mark for the first time in history.
The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) announced the milestone in a statement today.
Breakthrough in services sector
Matrade reported that the services sector posted its first trade surplus of RM1.15 billion, reversing 13 years of deficit since 2011.
Strong performance in travel and manufacturing services drove the recovery.
Total services trade broke the RM500 billion barrier for the first time, reaching a record RM543.01 billion, a 9.2 per cent increase from 2024.
Exports in the sector soared to a historic high of RM272.08 billion, growing by 12 per cent.
Imports rose more modestly by 6.4 per cent to RM270.93 billion, delivering the overall surplus.
Commitment to sustained momentum
Matrade chairman Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the first services surplus in 14 years demonstrated the effectiveness of Malaysia’s strategic pivot to a high-value, knowledge-based economy.
“With total trade reaching a record RM543.01 billion, we remain committed to sustaining this momentum by enhancing export promotion initiatives in major and emerging markets, in line with diversification strategies to ensure sustainable growth,” he said.
The dual milestones in goods and services trade underline Malaysia’s strengthening position in the global economy.
