Manchester United bolstered their bid to qualify for the Champions League with a vital 3-1 win against top-four rivals Aston Villa on Sunday.
The victory at Old Trafford moved the home side three points clear of fourth-placed Villa as the race for European spots intensifies.
The win marks a successful period for interim manager Michael Carrick, who has now secured seven victories in nine games since taking over. While co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has praised the interim manager’s excellent work, he has yet to commit to a long-term appointment following the departure of Ruben Amorim.
Despite an 11-day break following a previous defeat, United appeared sharp and disciplined. The team reacted well to the pressure of the fixture, with the interim boss noting that his players looked like a good team and handled the big-game atmosphere effectively.
Fernandes breaks long-standing record
After a scoreless first half, United opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. Following a corner curled in by Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro made a well-timed run to glance a header past Emiliano Martinez for his seventh league goal of the campaign.
Villa found a way back into the match in the 64th minute through Ross Barkley. Making his first Premier League start in 14 months, Barkley capitalized on United’s failure to clear the ball and fired a strike past Senne Lammens from 12 yards out.
United regained the lead in the 71st minute when Matheus Cunha latched onto a pass from Fernandes to slot the ball into the far corner.
This assist was the 16th of the season for Fernandes, moving the captain past the club record of 15 previously held by David Beckham. Since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, Fernandes has now reached 100 assists for the club across all competitions.
Late surge secures the points
The victory was finalized in the 81st minute when Benjamin Sesko, who came off the bench, scored with a deflected effort. The result leaves Villa struggling with just one win in their last seven league matches, though they remain three points above fifth-placed Chelsea with eight games remaining.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Nottingham Forest moved out of the relegation zone following a 0-0 draw against Fulham. Forest currently sit above West Ham on goal difference as both sides fight to avoid the drop.
At Crystal Palace, ten-man Leeds held on for a 0-0 draw despite a missed penalty and a red card for Gabriel Gudmundsson. The dismissal involved a moment of confusion from the referee, who initially forgot the player’s earlier booking before being corrected via his earpiece. Meanwhile, Tottenham face a difficult trip to Liverpool, with the London side in danger of falling into the relegation zone following a long winless streak.
