Ruben Amorim acknowledged Manchester United were lucky to secure a 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Friday. He praised his depleted squad for displaying remarkable spirit during a fierce second-half pressure from the visitors.
The team was without injured captain Bruno Fernandes. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo were also unavailable, attending the Africa Cup of Nations, forcing Amorim to make adjustments.
Dorgu Delivers Decisive Strike
Patrick Dorgu was deployed in an unfamiliar attacking role on the right flank. The Dane netted his maiden goal for United, clinching the side’s first home win in two months under Amorim.
United showed promise in the first half. However, they spent most of the second period defending resolutely.
Despite Newcastle controlling 67 percent possession and registering 16 shots, United earned only their second clean sheet of the season.
Amorim Reflects on Suffering Together
“We had to suffer all together in the stadium,” Amorim remarked.
He noted a strong first-half performance followed by a need to focus solely on defence and occasional counters in the second.
“It was a good win but I had so many games here saying we played really well and didn’t get the three points. Today was the opposite, we suffered together and managed to win the game.”
League Implications
The win propelled United to fifth in the Premier League, drawing them level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
A top-five placing could suffice for Champions League qualification next season, given English clubs’ solid performances in European competitions this term.
Newcastle’s Champions League aspirations are diminishing amid poor away results. Eddie Howe’s side remain 11th, with just one victory in nine league away games this season.
Howe’s Post-Match Assessment
“The second half was a lot better than the first, but we didn’t do enough. We had to do more,” Howe stated.
His team dominated the second period, and he believed a goal could have sparked a comeback victory.
However, it did not materialise.
