Bersatu’s Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has turned down demands for her to resign as Melaka Perikatan Nasional chief. This follows party president Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision to step down as PN chairman. She insisted her choice stems from responsibility and the need for organisational stability.
Mas Ermieyati stressed that her position is not about clinging to power. It considers the broader interest of PN at the state level. She noted no internal conflict in Melaka that requires her immediate resignation.
Harmonious Relations in Melaka
Relations among PN component parties in the state remain harmonious. Melaka PN is preparing for a state election expected in the next four to six months. Leadership continuity is vital for effective coordination and momentum.
Any abrupt leadership change could weaken the coalition’s progress. Mas Ermieyati rejected claims that state-level PN posts are automatically void after Muhyiddin’s resignation. Such appointments were decided collectively by the PN Supreme Council.
Muhyiddin announced his resignation as PN chairman effective January 1. Azmin Ali followed by stepping down as secretary-general and Selangor PN chief on the same date. Several other state PN leaders, including those from Johor, Perak, and Negeri Sembilan, also resigned from their coalition posts.
Call for Calm Amid Tensions
Recent accusations from PAS leaders targeted Bersatu over its handling of assemblymen in Perlis. Mas Ermieyati urged calm to avoid public spats on social media. Such disputes could erode confidence in PN as an alternative government.
The Masjid Tanah MP said she is willing to step down from her Melaka PN and women’s wing roles. This would only happen if decided through proper channels. It must serve the best interest of the coalition.
