Gabungan Rakyat Sabah secretary-general Masidi Manjun has firmly rejected allegations of corruption and election rule violations during the recent Sabah polls.
An independent candidate, Naomi @ Neomi Francis, has filed a judicial review in the Kota Kinabalu High Court seeking to nullify the Election Commission’s declaration of Masidi as winner in the Karanaan seat and to call for fresh polls.
Masidi described the claims as baseless and unfounded, saying they aimed to undermine the democratic process and public trust.
Strong Denial Issued
“I categorically deny any allegation of corrupt practices or any other alleged breach of election rules during the recent election in Sabah,” he told FMT.
He acknowledged Malaysia’s democratic system, noting it is Naomi’s right to pursue legal action over alleged violations.
Masidi stressed that GRS conducted its campaign transparently, lawfully, and with integrity.
Commitment to Democracy
“We remain committed to upholding democratic values and ensuring that the voice of the people is respected,” he said.
He called on all parties to avoid spreading misinformation and to honour the election results, which reflect voters’ will.
“If and when the legal process requires it, any such allegation will be vigorously challenged,” he added.
Court Details
The case is scheduled for mention on February 4 before Justice Alexander Siew, with Masidi and the Election Commission named as defendants.
Naomi reportedly accused the EC of failing in its duty to ensure a fair election in Karanaan in line with the law.
Specific Allegations
She claimed the poll was marred by widespread corrupt practices, including vote-buying, bribery, and undue influence.
Voters allegedly received cash handouts of RM100 to RM200 in at least four locations within Karanaan, with inducements to support Masidi.
Naomi also raised concerns over polling irregularities, such as her agent being denied initial access and issues with Form 14.
Election Results
Masidi secured the Karanaan seat with a 5,361-vote majority in a seven-cornered fight.
He defeated candidates from Barisan Nasional, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat, Warisan, Upko, and Naomi.
Naomi garnered only 115 votes.
