The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is probing a viral Facebook post that shows a fake Utusan Malaysia news image.
The altered image wrongly states that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confessed to errors in agreements with the United States.
Carrying the Utusan Malaysia logo, the image has been verified as fabricated and risks confusing the public.
Authorities have summoned the suspected uploader for questioning, recording a statement at the Alor Gajah district police headquarters in Melaka.
“Preliminary investigations confirmed that Utusan Malaysia has denied publishing such a report and clarified that it was an unauthorised use of the newspaper’s name and logo,” MCMC stated today.
One mobile phone and one SIM card were seized for digital forensic examination.
The case falls under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, up to two years in jail, or both upon conviction.
MCMC reminded the public to check facts before sharing content online, especially items using media logos without approval.
“The spread of false content can undermine the credibility of legitimate news sources and may lead to legal action,” it warned.
