The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from PAS’s Manjoi assemblyman, Hafez Sabri, over a controversial social media post on a security breach involving Sultan Nazrin Shah during the Perak state-level National Day celebration.
MCMC said the post was false and racially charged, alleging that the woman who climbed the stage on Aug 31 was Chinese.
“As confirmed by Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department director, this allegation is untrue and risks stoking racial tension and creating negative public perceptions,” MCMC said in a statement today.
The commission added that Hafez’s statement was recorded at Bukit Aman police headquarters yesterday, in cooperation with the police.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum penalty of RM500,000, up to two years in prison, or both.
MCMC stressed that spreading false and racially provocative content is a serious offence that threatens social harmony and public order. It reminded the public to verify information before creating or sharing on social media.
Police clarified that the woman was a 41-year-old Malay with a history of psychiatric treatment. She had rushed the stage from the side during the Perak state anthem and was subdued by security officers.
Ipoh police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said she has been remanded until Wednesday and is being investigated for attempted grievous hurt under Section 325/511 of the Penal Code.
Hafez later deleted and apologised for the post, claiming it was manipulated by “irresponsible parties” who spread a screenshot before he corrected it within minutes. DAP Youth wings in Penang and Negeri Sembilan have since lodged police reports against him.
