The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has warned the public not to share a video allegedly linked to the recent gang rape of a Form 3 student in Melaka.
In a statement, MCMC said that sharing such content online could constitute an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which covers the improper use of network facilities.
The offence carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC said it is working with the police and service providers to remove any content that could interfere with the investigation or cause emotional harm to the victim.
The commission also reminded media organisations to report the case responsibly and avoid publishing sensational material that could expose the victim’s identity.
Doing so would breach Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which prohibits revealing any detail that may identify a child victim.
Four Form 5 students are currently under remand until Oct 16 for allegedly raping a 15-year-old female student in a classroom at their school in Alor Gajah, Melaka, on Oct 2.
Two of the suspects reportedly committed the act while the other two watched and recorded the incident on their mobile phones.
