The Melaka state government has ordered the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (Jaim) to conduct a thorough investigation into a boutique hotel allegedly promoting a “gay-friendly” concept. The issue went viral on Monday (Jan 12) following a social media post by independent preacher Firdaus Wong.
Rahmad Mariman, the state Exco for Education, Higher Education, and Religious Affairs, confirmed today (Jan 13) that evidence is being gathered to verify the claims.
“We cannot make preliminary decisions until the information is clear,” he stated.
On Monday, a post went viral on social media claiming the existence of a gay-friendly hotel in Melaka, sparking heated debate among netizens.
The issue was highlighted by independent preacher Firdaus Wong, who questioned the growing trend of businesses branding themselves as “friendly”.
“The branding is quite creative. Even the label ‘Muslim-friendly’ can be turned into a business, let alone ‘gay-friendly’. What creative ideas will emerge next? ‘Pig-friendly’ or ‘LGBT-friendly’?” he wrote.
“Besides pet-friendly malls, Malaysia also has family-friendly and child-friendly concepts, and now even gay-friendly hotels in Melaka,” he added.
The matter has since drawn public attention and prompted the religious authorities to step in.
