Barisan Nasional (BN) Deputy Chairman Mohamad Hasan has urged MIC leaders to use the coalition’s Supreme Council as the platform to voice their opinions or express dissatisfaction, cautioning against public statements that could be misinterpreted.
Speaking after opening the 2025 Merdeka Carnival in Seremban on September 6, 2025, the Umno deputy president emphasized that MIC leaders should avoid making remarks outside the council, as such actions could disrupt the coalition’s harmony.
“If you have views, speak up. Don’t stay silent during meetings and then say something different outside—that’s not constructive,” Mohamad said. “The unity within BN can be undermined by such statements. If there are concerns, raise them in the BN Supreme Council, which has always been a forum for all component parties, including Umno and MCA.”
He added, “There’s no need to speak publicly, as it can sometimes be misunderstood. It’s better for component party leaders to discuss matters through the Supreme Council rather than airing opinions that could negatively impact their own party.”
Mohamad, who also serves as the foreign minister, was responding to recent comments by some MIC leaders suggesting the party might leave BN. The tensions stem from claims that BN Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi failed to fulfill a promise of cabinet positions in exchange for MIC’s support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.
It is understood that four MIC state liaison committees have passed resolutions to exit the coalition, highlighting internal frustrations.
Mohamad underscored MIC’s historical role in BN, noting that the party has been integral to nation-building efforts since before Malaysia’s independence. He urged MIC to remain within the coalition and address grievances internally to maintain unity.
