Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol’s new role as federal deputy youth and sports minister proves DAP grooms Dayak leaders, not just Chinese ones.
The Sarawak DAP vice-chairman says this counters views of DAP as a Chinese-dominated party, per Borneo Post.
Proving DAP’s Open Door
“People label DAP a Chinese party. I’m Dayak, speak no Chinese, yet I joined – now as deputy minister,” Mordi said.
He sees it as a chance to show Dayaks thrive in DAP.
The two-term MP joined in 2011 to spark change and serve Mas Gading folk.
Gratitude for Party Trust
Mordi thanked Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen and central leaders for backing him in 2018, despite prior defeats.
DAP first ran him in 2013 general election; he lost to Barisan Nasional’s Anthony Nogeh Gumbek by 2,156 votes.
In 2016 Sarawak polls, he fell to Henry Harry Jinep (BN) in Tasik Biru.
Breakthrough and Strong Wins
Victory came in 2018 (GE14), beating Anthony with a 3,024-vote majority in Mas Gading.
He grew it to 5,480 votes in 2022 (GE15).
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim appointed Mordi deputy youth and sports minister last month during a Cabinet reshuffle with portfolio shifts.
