Perikatan Nasional (PN) president Muhyiddin Yassin has acknowledged that the coalition may not be able to form the Johor state government, but said it is aiming to secure enough seats to serve as an effective opposition.
Speaking at the Bersatu Demi Johor rally in Parit Raja on Tuesday night, he said a strong opposition presence in the state legislative assembly is crucial to ensure proper checks and balances over the state administration.
“Even if we are unable to form the government, we still need enough seats so that we can serve as the opposition and carry out checks and balances.
“The state government cannot do as it pleases. It must explain how Johor’s funds are spent and be held accountable in the state assembly,” said the Pagoh MP.
Calls for accountable governance
Muhyiddin urged voters to use the state election to choose representatives who can contribute to Johor’s development while ensuring the government remains transparent and accountable.
He said elected representatives should play an active role in scrutinising government policies and public spending for the benefit of the people.
Cost of living remains key concern
Muhyiddin also said the rising cost of living continues to be one of the biggest challenges faced by Malaysians and requires serious attention from the government.
He said many households are still struggling as incomes fail to keep pace with rising prices and the increasing cost of daily necessities.
“That is why voters need to elect representatives who can truly bring about change and fight for their interests,” he said.
The Parit Raja state seat is being contested in a three-cornered fight involving PN’s Maliki Rapiee, Barisan Nasional’s Nor Rashidah Ramli and Pakatan Harapan’s Shazwan Zdainal.
Polling for the Johor state election is scheduled for July 11, while early voting was held on Tuesday.
