Former prime minister Najib Razak’s bid for a pardon over his convictions linked to the 1MDB scandal will be heard at the next meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB).
The Legal Affairs Division in the Prime Minister’s Department said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, who chaired today’s meeting, consented to defer the application to the next meeting.
The division said Sultan Ibrahim also consented at today’s meeting to the release of 65 inmates.
“All non-citizen inmates must be deported and sent back to their countries of origin within six months of their release,” it said in a statement today.
It had previously been reported that today’s FTPB meeting was expected to consider Najib’s pardon application, among other matters.
Najib’s first conviction
The 72-year-old was convicted six years ago of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International funds.
He was fined RM210 million and sentenced to 12 years in prison. He has been serving his sentence at Kajang prison since August 2022.
The FTPB later reduced his prison term to six years and his fine to RM50 million.
1MDB conviction and appeal
In December 2025, Najib was convicted of abuse of power and money laundering involving more than RM2 billion linked to 1MDB.
He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined RM11.38 billion.
Najib is appealing the conviction.
