Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday, a day after one of the deadliest crackdowns on protesters in years left at least 19 people dead.
In a letter submitted to the president, Oli wrote: “I have resigned from the post of prime minister with effect from today… in order to take further steps towards a political solution and resolution of the problems.”
According to the BBC, the statement signed by Oli confirmed that his resignation was intended to pave the way for a constitutional solution to the ongoing crisis.
Protests erupted in the capital Kathmandu and across Nepal early Tuesday, with demonstrators attacking and vandalising residences of high-profile politicians, including Oli and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Several political party headquarters were also targeted.
Mohan Regmi, executive director of the Civil Service Hospital, told the BBC that two individuals died during Tuesday’s protest while about 90 people are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
