Selangor PAS Youth has outlined 10 reasons why PAS should be given the opportunity to lead Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Selangor, citing its strong grassroots machinery and readiness to govern.
Selangor PN needs fresh and more aggressive leadership if the coalition is serious about winning the next state election, said Selangor PAS Youth information chief Suffi Kamari.
He said Selangor PAS had experienced leaders with backgrounds in administration, politics, organisation and grassroots mobilisation.
The post of Selangor PN chief is currently vacant following the resignation of Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali in January.
PAS highlights its grassroots machinery
Suffi said someone from PAS should take over the role, arguing that the party’s grassroots machinery operates throughout the year at state, parliamentary, state constituency, branch and polling district levels, rather than only during elections.
He also said the current political landscape had changed and PN could no longer rely on old strategies or leadership formulas to secure victory in the next general election.
“PAS is ready to lead, not merely seek positions. We are not asking for comfortable positions. We are asking for responsibility,” he said.
“We do not want to remain in opposition forever. Our goal is clear – build our strength, win the confidence of the people and offer Selangor a new government.
“This is about the next general election, the future of PN and who is best prepared to lead the wave of change in Selangor,” he said.
Suffi added that Selangor PN also needed stronger opposition leadership capable of acting as a check and balance against the Selangor government.
PAS says it is ready to govern
Suffi said PAS was also ready to serve as a government-in-waiting, with policies, a team, solutions and leadership to take over the state administration if given the people’s mandate.
His statement came after PAS delegate Sukri Omar called for PAS to lead Selangor PN.
Suffi said PAS had several candidates capable of helming Selangor PN, including state PAS commissioner Ahmad Yunus Hairi.
Sukri made the call during the debate on the party president’s policy speech at PAS’s general assembly in Kota Bharu earlier today.
He said PAS had a team of professionals and religious leaders ready to take over Selangor’s administration.
Azmin’s role in Selangor PN
In April, Bersatu proposed that Azmin be reappointed to head Selangor PN, as the Hulu Kelang assemblyman is the opposition leader in the state assembly.
Azmin, who was Selangor menteri besar from 2014 to 2018, resigned as Selangor PN chief on Jan 1 following Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision to step down as PN chairman.
