Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today stated he has no information regarding claims that fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, widely known as Jho Low, is currently residing in Shanghai, China.
Anwar indicated that the Home Ministry would need to verify the claims concerning Low’s whereabouts.
“I have no information. We haven’t received any information on this,” he briefly told reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony of Kompleks Madani at Teluk Kumbar. “I read (the media reports). I need to confirm with the minister.”
His comments came in response to recent media reports alleging that Low, the elusive Malaysian businessman, is living in a mansion in Shanghai, China, using a fake passport and a false identity.
Investigative Journalists Claim New Evidence of Low’s Location and Role
Late yesterday, investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright claimed that Low, the alleged mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal, is believed to be residing in a high-end neighborhood in Shanghai and holding a fake Australian passport.
In a YouTube livestream on their “Project Brazen” platform, Hope and Wright stated they had gathered evidence from various sources and newly uncovered documents. These, they claim, show Low living in a mansion in Green Hills, an “ultra high-end neighborhood” in Shanghai, complete with multiple luxury cars, located just a 15-minute drive from his alleged office in Shanghai’s financial center.
They further alleged that Low is using a fake Australian passport under the Greek name Constantinos Achilles Veis to conceal his true identity.
Hope and Wright also claimed that Low is now working as a “behind-the-scenes strategist for the Chinese government.” His role, they asserted, allegedly includes helping sanctioned Chinese companies “navigate difficulties around the world.”
The duo are former Wall Street Journal journalists renowned for breaking many of the pivotal early 1MDB stories and co-authoring the acclaimed book “Billion Dollar Whale” about the scandal.
Low, who faces charges in both Malaysia and the US for allegedly orchestrating the theft of US$4.5 billion from 1MDB, was previously rumored to be in Macau, although Beijing has consistently denied protecting the fugitive financier.
