The Perikatan Nasional (PN) Supreme Council will meet after the PAS annual muktamar to discuss several issues, including Bersatu’s position in the coalition.
PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the meeting would be held after the PAS muktamar, which runs from tomorrow until Sept 5, Berita Harian reported.
“We will convene a meeting to discuss relevant issues, including the issue of Bersatu. We may also discuss Bersatu’s position in PN,” he was quoted as saying.
Bersatu’s position under review
Takiyuddin said Bersatu had no reason to remain in PN, arguing that the party was clearly no longer aligned with the coalition, which is now led by PAS.
He added that the PN constitution allows component parties to be sacked or have their memberships suspended.
Tensions between PAS and Bersatu began to emerge towards the end of last year, eventually leading to PAS ending its political cooperation with Bersatu in June.
Bersatu later contested independently in the Negeri Sembilan polls, going against PN, and subsequently accused PAS of leading the opposition coalition astray and turning it “toxic”.
PAS leaders invited to Umno assembly
Separately, Utusan Malaysia quoted Takiyuddin as confirming that PAS leaders would attend the Umno general assembly in Kuala Lumpur next week.
Invitations have been extended to Takiyuddin, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and two other party representatives.
Takiyuddin said Hadi’s attendance would depend on his health. If the PAS president is unable to attend, another party leader would represent him.
Umno and PAS formally rekindled their ties during the Negeri Sembilan election, contesting under a Barisan Nasional-PN alliance and securing a two-thirds majority.
