Perikatan Nasional (PN) will contest more than four seats in the coming Melaka state election, its deputy chairman Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said.
However, Tuan Ibrahim did not disclose the number of seats the coalition intends to contest.
“It will be finalised in the near future after discussions with Umno,” he told reporters after attending the tabling of Budget 2027 in Parliament today.
Last month, Tuan Ibrahim said PN and PAS were expected to contest between seven and 10 seats in the Nov 14 polls.
He also said PN and Umno had discussed seat allocations and drawn up a basic framework for the election.
PN and Bersatu’s seat allocation
In the 2021 Melaka state election, PN won two of the 28 seats it contested through Bersatu.
PAS failed to win any of the eight seats it contested and ended its ties with Bersatu in June.
On Monday, Melaka Bersatu said it was determined to defend Bemban and Sungai Udang, which it won in the previous election. However, both incumbents have since left the party for Wawasan, which was admitted as a PN component in July.
Melaka Bersatu information chief Hishamuddin Abdul Karim also said the party was expected to contest up to 10 of Melaka’s 28 state seats.
Tuan Ibrahim denies knowledge of Selangor pact
Tuan Ibrahim also denied knowing about an agreement between Selangor Bersatu assemblymen and Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
“We (PN) are still the opposition (in the state). Maybe there was a misunderstanding,” he said.
Yesterday, Amirudin said Bersatu assemblymen would sign an agreement with the state government similar to the 2021 confidence and supply agreement between former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and the opposition.
The agreement is expected to be signed before the state budget is tabled, although Amirudin said the state government and the opposition were still finalising its terms.
Bersatu assemblywoman Nurul Syazwani Noh also said she was unaware of the party’s plans to sign such an agreement.
Tuan Ibrahim said the arrangement would be unfair to voters who had supported PN in the previous state election.
