Bersatu’s Port Dickson division has unanimously passed a motion proposing a leadership transition, calling for deputy president Hamzah Zainudin to take over the party’s leadership from Muhyiddin Yassin.
The division which led by Badrul Hisham Shaharin proposed the motion to achieve a “planned leadership transition”, naming Hamzah as the “main leader” and vice-president Radzi Jidin to handle party administration, currently overseen by secretary-general Azmin Ali.
The motion, tabled during the division’s annual general meeting by deputy chief Akkil Aizat Othman, suggests Muhyiddin become an adviser and mentor. However, it does not explicitly state that Hamzah would assume the presidency.
Akkil noted that Bersatu missed key opportunities to connect with the public amid government missteps, stressing the need for stronger communications and disciplinary reforms ahead of GE16.
According to Free Malaysia Today (FMT), Badrul confirmed the motion was one of four passed by the division, aimed at initiating strategic shifts in preparation for the next general election.
Akkil added the proposal was not about rejecting Muhyiddin’s leadership but about ensuring stability and clearer direction as GE16 approaches.
“We respect Muhyiddin’s wisdom, but people want a party that addresses grassroots issues,” he said.
Speculation has been mounting about internal pressure for Hamzah to replace Muhyiddin, while others aligned with Azmin support maintaining the status quo.
Earlier reports also suggested that PAS proposed restructuring the Perikatan Nasional coalition, placing Hamzah as head of a daily executive committee while party presidents formed an advisory council.
Hamzah dismissed the claims as “nonsense” from outsiders trying to split PN and Bersatu.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin also denied PAS was trying to remove him, saying PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had personally expressed support for him to stay on.
