PAS believes its political dominance in Perlis could be further strengthened if efforts to revive Muafakat Nasional (MN) are successfully realised.
Perlis PAS Ulama Council chief Ahmad Adnan Fadzil said the party would not find it difficult to continue leading the state if three key pillars were effectively utilised.
He said these pillars are Arau MP and PAS deputy commissioner III Shahidan Kassim, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin, and Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Ahmad Adnan said Perlis politics has long been shaped by personality-driven figures, citing the late former PAS spiritual leader Haron Din as an example.
He said Shahidan and Hashim were previously in different camps, with Shahidan known for his mass appeal and Hashim forming the backbone of PAS Perlis. Both are now aligned within the same party.
He described most Perlis residents as politically reserved, noting that their true political views are rarely expressed openly but reflected through ballots.
“Many voters remain fence-sitters, with PAS, Umno and Bersatu forming the main support bases,” he said.
Ahmad Adnan said PAS has strong grassroots machinery, but overall support depends on winning over fence-sitters, maintaining Bersatu’s backing and attracting some Umno voters.
He added that this combination has been key to PAS’ electoral success in the state.
He also highlighted the close relationship between the Perlis monarchy and the people, noting the active engagement of the Raja Muda of Perlis, Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.
Additionally, he said the Perlis mufti, Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, plays a significant role in shaping religious discourse and social thinking, influencing the state’s political landscape.
