Former DAP strongman Ronnie Liu has joined Julau MP Larry Sng’s Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), more than three years after leaving the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
Liu, a former Selangor assemblyman, announced his decision at a press conference today alongside Sng, who previously led PKR’s Sarawak chapter.
The move marks Liu’s return to active party politics after he left DAP in June 2023 following 41 years as a member.
Liu served DAP for 41 years
During his long tenure with DAP, Liu served several terms on the party’s central executive committee.
He was the assemblyman for Pandamaran from 2008 to 2013 and served on the Selangor executive council during that period.
Liu later represented Sungai Pelek from 2018 to 2022.
His departure from DAP in June 2023 was prompted by dissatisfaction with the party leadership’s move to amend its constitution concerning the termination of memberships.
Dispute over DAP constitutional amendment
The amendment allowed DAP elected representatives to automatically lose their party membership if they failed to follow the party line on fundamental issues.
Liu had argued that the provision was undemocratic.
More than three years after leaving DAP, Liu has now joined PBM, led by Sng.
