As of 10am, voter turnout in the 17th Sabah state election reached only 21.05%, according to the Election Commission.
Polling centres across all 73 state constituencies will remain open until 5pm today.
For comparison, the overall turnout in the 2020 Sabah election was 66.61%.
Election Background
This snap election follows the dissolution of the state assembly on October 6. A total of 1,784,843 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots.
The previous state government was initially formed by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Barisan Nasional (BN) after the 2020 polls.
Shifting Political Alliances
Barisan Nasional withdrew from the state government in January 2023 following an unsuccessful bid to remove GRS chairman Hajiji Noor as chief minister.
Several BN assemblymen continued to support Hajiji. Pakatan Harapan was later brought into the state government after pledging its backing for the chief minister.
