The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has announced that Sabah futsal head coach Roger Filipe Augusto could face suspension and fines following a shocking incident where he was punched by a team official after a heated match against Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) on Saturday.
FAM secretary-general Noor Azman Rahman stated that a thorough investigation is underway, with match officials and referees tasked with submitting detailed reports for review by the FAM disciplinary committee.
“We are examining the incident and awaiting comprehensive reports from match officials and referees,” Noor Azman told Berita Harian. “All findings will be compiled and forwarded to the disciplinary committee to determine appropriate measures. If found culpable, the coach may face a suspension and monetary penalty.”
The altercation, which followed Sabah’s 4-3 loss to JDT in the Malaysia Futsal Cup third-place playoff at the N9 Arena in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, was captured in viral footage. Sabah had held a commanding 3-1 lead, only for JDT to mount a stunning comeback to clinch victory.
At the final whistle, Augusto stormed onto the court, seemingly intent on confronting a match official or an opposing player. A fellow team official intervened to restrain him, but the situation escalated when Augusto elbowed his colleague. In response, the official delivered a punch that sent the Portuguese-born coach sprawling to the ground.
The match and the ensuing incident were broadcast live on Astro Arena, amplifying its visibility.
