The Malaysian government is set to introduce a new passport and a redesigned MyKad by June this year, focusing on advanced security features to combat forgery and enhance national security.
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, following his ministerial address on Thursday (Jan 8), emphasized that these updates are necessary to keep pace with technological advancements.
“These are critical security documents, and it is our responsibility to ensure they remain fraud-proof,” he said.
Regarding citizenship issues, Saifuddin expressed optimism that the backlog of applications, some spanning up to 15 years, will be fully resolved by the end of the first quarter.
He noted that there are currently fewer than 4,000 such long-standing cases remaining, and final decisions will be made by March.
On the matter of automatic citizenship for children born abroad to Malaysian mothers, the minister shared that the government aims for the relevant constitutional amendments to take effect between June and July this year.
