The Sarawak assembly will be dissolved next Monday to pave the way for the state election, Premier Abang Johari Openg said.
Speaking at a press conference at the Satria Pertiwi Complex in Kuching today, Abang Johari said Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had given his consent to the dissolution.
He said the Election Commission would announce the nomination and polling dates.
The assembly held its final sitting on Oct 14, during which it passed the state budget for next year.
GPS won 76 seats in 2021 election
The last Sarawak state election was held in December 2021, when Abang Johari’s Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition won 76 of the 82 seats in the state legislature, securing a two-thirds majority.
Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) won four seats, while DAP secured two.
PSB merger expands government bloc
In 2025, PSB merged en bloc with the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), one of the four component parties in GPS.
The merger expanded the state government’s bloc to 80 seats.
