Seberang Perai Utara police have opened an investigation after a man was filmed hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
District police chief Anuar Abd Rahman said the probe covers improper use of emblems and names, insulting behaviour and improper use of network facilities. “Police have recorded statements from both the complainant and the suspect,” he said in a statement.
A video uploaded at about 12.30pm today shows a man raising the flag while another person records the action. A report was lodged at the Kepala Batas police station following the incident.
Anuar urged the public not to sensationalise the matter so as not to disturb public order while the investigation is ongoing.
Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that the hardware shop owner involved said he had been measuring the length of an iron pole when he hung the flag and did not realise it was upside down. He said he corrected the mistake immediately after noticing it, apologised for the error and lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station to provide an explanation.
The incident is the sixth flag-related case since January and the second this month. On Aug 1, SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson apologised after mistakenly flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
