Beijing has lashed out at Washington for what it calls discriminatory and politically motivated treatment of Chinese students entering the United States.
Foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a press conference on Aug 22 that Chinese students have been subjected to unfair practices, including being taken into “small, dark rooms” for repeated and prolonged interrogations.
“Some have been detained for more than 70 hours and questioned on matters unrelated to their travel purpose. In certain cases, visas were cancelled and entry denied under so-called national security concerns,” Mao said.
She stressed that such actions seriously infringe upon Chinese citizens’ rights, obstruct normal exchanges, and damage the atmosphere for people-to-people and cultural ties.
Mao added that China has lodged immediate representations after each case and urged Washington to “investigate thoroughly and correct its mistakes.”
“We urge the US to face the issue squarely, take China’s concerns seriously, and implement its leaders’ statements welcoming Chinese students,” she said.
