Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal has indicated that he may contest as an independent candidate in the 16th general election (GE16).
The former Bersatu member said a final decision would only be made after assessing the political landscape, which he described as still fluid and unstable.
Confidence in personal track record
Syed Abu Hussin said he was confident in his own strengths and record of serving the people, adding that he did not intend to depend on any political party for support.
“I am confident in my personal strength and track record of serving the people. I do not want to ride on my friends’ parties. I want a party to ride on my strengths.
“The current political landscape has shown that no party can claim victory solely based on its brand name anymore,” he was quoted as saying at an event in Bukit Gantang, Perak.
Plans to field his own team
He also revealed plans to field his preferred candidates in the three state constituencies within the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat during the upcoming election.
The constituencies are Trong, Changkat Jering and Kuala Sepetang, which he described as key areas in measuring local political influence and strength.
“This time, I want to have my own team. My people must be present in all three state constituencies,” he said.
Among former Bersatu representatives backing government
Syed Abu Hussin was among several Bersatu MPs who declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration in late 2023.
The others were Azizi Abu Naim of Gua Musang, Zulkafperi Hanapi of Tanjong Karang, Zahari Kechik of Jeli, Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid of Kuala Kangsar and Suhaili Abdul Rahman of Labuan.
Selat Klang assemblyman Abdul Rashid Asari also declared his support for Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
All seven ceased to be Bersatu members effective May 31, 2024, after failing to respond to a notice requiring them to confirm their loyalty to the party.
