A TikTok user has been ordered by the High Court to pay RM100,000 in damages to Rosmah Mansor, wife of former Prime Minister Najib Razak, over defamatory remarks alleging her involvement in black magic and witchcraft.
Judge Datuk Ahmad Shahrir Mohd Salleh ruled in favor of the 74-year-old plaintiff, stating that Rosmah had successfully proven damage to her reputation.
According to Berita Harian, the defendant, 35-year-old Ku Muhammad Hilmie Ku Din, had uploaded a video to his TikTok account on March 22, 2023, containing statements implying that Rosmah engaged in sinful acts and associations with evil forces and shamans. Rosmah filed the suit on September 19, 2023.
The ruling was made via Zoom during an online damages assessment session, as the defendant failed to file a memorandum of appearance by the required date.
The judge described the RM100,000 award as “fair and balanced,” covering general and aggravated damages. Claims for exemplary damages were dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
Rosmah said the defamatory video tarnished her public image as the wife of Malaysia’s sixth Prime Minister and patron of charitable organizations, causing her to be viewed negatively by the public.
