US President Donald Trump said planned military strikes against Iran have been cancelled, provided a deal with Tehran can be reached quickly.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had agreed to cancel the attack ‘for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran’, subject to being able to ‘rapidly make a DEAL’.
He added that the decision had been made together with Israel.
The announcement followed reports by US media that Washington had been considering launching new and more intensive strikes against Iran over the weekend.
Iran warns against regional cooperation with US
Earlier, Tehran accused the United States of escalating tensions and warned that any country in the region cooperating with Washington would be ‘engulfed by the flames of war’.
Trump said he decided to suspend the planned attack after being asked by Iran and several Middle Eastern countries to delay military action to allow negotiations to proceed.
He said any agreement would include the ‘Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT’ as well as an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
US issues security advisory
Before Trump’s announcement, the US government issued a security advisory urging Americans across the Middle East to remain vigilant and be prepared to leave if the regional situation deteriorates.
The advisory urged US citizens in the region to exercise caution, remain on heightened alert, and prepare for possible flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures and travel disruptions should tensions escalate.
