President Donald Trump intensified his rhetoric early Tuesday regarding the ongoing American military campaign against Iran. The president highlighted the significant scale of strikes conducted under Operation Epic Fury, which reportedly utilised B-2 stealth bombers and heavy munitions.
On his Truth Social platform, the president shared a post without a caption showing the city of Isfahan engulfed in flames. The footage depicted massive explosions illuminating the night sky over the city, which has a population of approximately 2.3 million and houses the Badr military airbase.
These developments follow a stern warning from the president, who cautioned that Iran’s energy infrastructure could be obliterated if a diplomatic deal is not reached in the near future.
Precision strikes on military infrastructure
A United States official cited by The Wall Street Journal confirmed that American forces targeted a large ammunition depot in Isfahan. The operation involved the use of 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs, with reports indicating that a significant number of penetrator munitions were deployed.
Isfahan is a strategically sensitive location, known to house enriched uranium associated with Iran’s nuclear programme. This is not the first time the city has faced such action; it was previously targeted during the summer under Operation Midnight Hammer, a campaign specifically focused on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Capabilities of the B-2 stealth bomber
The B-2 bomber is widely regarded as one of the most advanced aircraft in existence, featuring a unique flying-wing design and specialised materials that allow it to evade radar detection in heavily defended airspace. This stealth capability makes it the primary choice for striking fortified and deeply buried underground targets.
The aircraft is currently the only platform capable of deploying the GBU-57, a specialized weapon designed to penetrate deep into the earth before detonating. This munition was developed specifically to destroy hardened nuclear facilities and reinforced command centres that are beyond the reach of conventional bombs.
The effectiveness of this combination was previously demonstrated during Operation Midnight Hammer last June. In that mission, seven B-2 bombers reportedly dropped 14 of these penetrator bombs on nuclear sites at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan, marking the first known combat use of the weapon.
