U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday (Oct 20) he will soon travel to Malaysia, Japan and South Korea, while adding he wants “to be good to China,” Kyodo News reported.
Despite renewed U.S.–China trade tensions, Trump struck an optimistic tone ahead of a possible meeting next week with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. He said the venue would be suitable for talks.
During a lengthy exchange with reporters at the White House as he met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Trump said the administration is pushing for “a fair deal.”
He added he would first be in Malaysia, then Japan, before heading to South Korea for a regional summit.
Japanese government sources said Trump is expected to make a three-day visit to Japan from Oct 27 after traveling to Malaysia for a separate regional conference involving Southeast Asian countries and partners, before proceeding to South Korea.
The upcoming Asia trip will be Trump’s first to the region since his nonconsecutive second term began in January, according to Kyodo News.
