UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that the party will remain within Barisan Nasional (BN) and contest the upcoming 16th General Election as part of the coalition.
Despite recent calls from grassroots members in states like Kedah and Johor for UMNO to contest independently, Zahid stressed that UMNO has never gone solo in any general election.
“Some divisions have passed motions suggesting our electoral losses were due to cooperation with BN and Pakatan Harapan, but UMNO will not change course,” he said at the UMNO Lumut division meeting.
He reiterated that UMNO will continue using the BN “scale” logo and will not abandon allies such as MCA, MIC, PBRS, and Pakatan Harapan.
Perak UMNO chief Saarani Mohamad and Lumut division head Zambry Abdul Kadir also attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, UMNO secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki also said a day earlier that UMNO would not contest independently, as the party has never done so in its history, despite shifting political landscapes.
