Transport Minister Anthony Loke has called for restraint and urged all parties not to politicise the recent incident involving the upside-down display of the Jalur Gemilang at a school in Port Dickson.
He said the Education Ministry is currently investigating the matter to determine whether the error was deliberate or accidental.
“Whenever such incidents occur (involving improper display of the Jalur Gemilang), there are always quarters who attempt to politicise them.
However, we must allow the ministry to conduct a thorough investigation and establish whether it was intentional or otherwise. The Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of our national identity and must always be treated with dignity and respect.
Therefore, there is no need for anyone to exploit this matter for political mileage,” Loke said after launching the Merdeka Month celebrations for the Seremban parliamentary constituency at a local school today.
School Issues Apology
Yesterday, SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson issued a public apology following the incident, which occurred on August 1.
In a joint statement, the school board, Parent-Teacher Association, and school administration expressed deep regret and described the upside-down flag installation as an unintentional mistake caused by a staff member.
Education Ministry to Take Action
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated that firm action would be taken once the ministry receives the full investigation report. She stressed the seriousness of the matter, noting that schools and institutions have been repeatedly reminded of the importance and sensitivity of the national flag.
Commenting further, Loke — who is also the Member of Parliament for Seremban — reiterated the need for proper flag etiquette:
“We have consistently reminded everyone that when raising the Jalur Gemilang, it must be done correctly and respectfully. While unintentional mistakes can occur, it is important that the ministry investigates and addresses the issue,” he added.
