US authorities said on Friday that all known US citizens held in Venezuelan custody have been released, according to a statement posted by the US embassy in Caracas.
The announcement came hours after the release of Peruvian-American political detainee Arturo Gallino Rullier, with Venezuela-based rights group Foro Penal saying he was already traveling to the United States.
Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez has also announced a proposed amnesty law intended to free hundreds of detainees dating back to 1999, while excluding cases involving killings, serious human-rights abuses and drug trafficking, according to reports.
However, human-rights organizations have urged clarity and transparency, noting a gap between official claims of how many people have been released and the number independently verified, while warning that hundreds of political prisoners may still remain behind bars.
