Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan was called in by police today for questioning.
The probe links to a report about the late Daim Zainuddin’s family and alleged international media manipulation.
Wan Saiful said he does not know why he was summoned. He wonders if police aim to tie the opposition to the issue.
Questions Section 124B misuse
He criticised the probe under Section 124B of the Penal Code.
This section covers activities harmful to parliamentary democracy. Wan Saiful calls it an abuse by the unity government.
A 2012 Hansard quote from a minister defined such acts as “violent, unconstitutional activities” to topple elected institutions.
“How then can media reports or public campaigns fall under this?” Wan Saiful asked.
“Will politicians’ campaigns or media criticism now face criminal charges?”
Warns of media freedom threat
“Such moves seriously threaten media freedom,” he added. “Journalists risk investigation under this law.”
Police informed him that academics and NGO members also received summons.
Bukit Aman is probing claims of unnamed persons trying to topple the government and threaten stability.
The police report alleges Daim’s family hired a UK firm to pressure the Anti-Corruption Commission and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim through global media.
Daim’s widow Naimah Khalid denied destabilising the government, calling claims “false and preposterous”.
Family members and lawyers filed suit to stop the probe, deeming it unlawful, unconstitutional, and improperly motivated.
